The Whale Avenue in Patagonia

This strait in the extreme southwest of Chile is in the heart of the Alberto Agostini National Park. It allows you to catch up with the Beagle Channel, a passage which avoids crossing the dangerous Cape Horn so dreaded by sailors.

Although this place may be called the Avenue des Baleines, it is not an ideal observation point. Whales are primarily marine mammals that are always on the move. Therefore, there is no guarantee of encountering them. And if by some miracle we were to see them, they might not be very demonstrative. Because they use this place as a corridor, Whale Avenue is, therefore, primarily a place of passage.

Along the fjords and the coastline, it is possible to see glaciers and waterfalls. An incredible spectacle, so much so that one would pitch one’s tent for a few days. Just to observe this amazing spectacle. “And listen to the sound of that deep silence.”

During the few hours we spent in Whale Avenue, we only came across one ship. The wind was strong enough for an albatross to grace us with its presence.
