An Antarctica Patagonian Cruise on the Avenue of the Glaciers

Glacier Avenue is located in Chilean Antarctic Patagonia. This passage of the Beagle Strait was renamed so because it offers spectacular views of ice fields that come to finish their course in the Beagle Channel. This long strait avoids the terrible Cape Horn and often very rough seas when it is merely not raging.

The Avenue of the Glaciers, one of the treasures of Patagonia Antarctica

The Beagle Channel is, in fact, a strait that allows passing through the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego. In its western part, part of the canal has been renamed Glacier Avenue. Over a little less than an hour of navigation, we will cross no less than four gigantic glaciers. And they all have country names. France, Italy, Holland and Germany are the names that have been chosen to name these rivers of ice. And if Chile has elected the names of countries, it is merely in honour of the explorers of the 19th century. They worked on mapping this remote, dangerous and sometimes inhospitable region of the world. The Avenue of the Glaciers is located in Chile in the splendid Alberto de Agostini Park in an area that is generally called the Chilean Antarctic Patagonia.

Chilean Patagonia Antarctica and the glacier France

The glacier France, in the avenue of the glaciers, in Chile

A vast ice field, perched at the top of a cliff and an impressive waterfall running along the wall. This is undoubtedly what makes the charm of this immense glacier. The French glacier is sublime. So far it’s even maybe the most tremendous with the glacier Italia. We would like to be able to anchor there for a while to be able to look at it again and again.

In the far reaches of the Beagle Channel, the Germany glacier

This is the view from the Beagle Channel on the Germany Glacier. A glacier that is also known as the Roncagli Glacier. This Italian was a hydrographer who served as an officer in the Italian navy. To recognize this glacier, just think of a ski slope with a big rock in the middle. Of the four glaciers in this portion of the Beagle Channel, it is undoubtedly the one with the smallest inclination.

A sublime scenery with the glacier Italy

This glacier is recognizable by its kind of wave in the middle of its wall. The Italian Glacier is a magnificent river of ice that descends from the mountains to finish its course at sea level 0. A spectacle that is once again grandiose.

This glacier is easily recognizable because it is the only one with a steep slope. But you don’t see it finishing its course in the Beagle Channel because it is slightly set back.

This photo report was produced in collaboration with Australis. A Chilean company that operates two boats in the extreme south of Chile. A dream trip between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia, two cities at the end of the world. During this navigation in Tierra del Fuego aboard the ship Stella Australis, I had the chance to observe and photograph four glaciers of the portion of the Beagle Channel nicknamed the Avenue of the Glaciers. The cruise lasts five days and four nights, all-inclusive price from 1 565 USD. Reservations via www.australis.com
